The Hirschmann M4-FAST8-SFP (Order Code: 943 864-001) is an 8-port Fast Ethernet media module designed for the backbone switch chassis of the MACH4000 series. 

It provides high-density, flexible fiber-optic connectivity using Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) transceivers.

Core Function: Extends the MACH4000 chassis capability by adding up to 8 Fast Ethernet (100BASE-FX) optical/copper links using pluggable transceivers.

Industrial Application: Engineered for mission-critical network backbones in substation automation (IEC 61850-3), transportation, water treatment, and heavy process manufacturing.

Key Advantage: Hot-swappable module slots allow network expansion or maintenance without interrupting system backplane operations.

4. Operating Instructions

Safety Preparation: Always wear an ESD grounding wrist strap to protect sensitive electronic components on the board from static discharge.

Insertion into Mainframe:

Power down or prepare the MACH4000 chassis slot.

Align the card edges of the M4-FAST8-SFP module with the guide rails of the target slot.

Slide the module firmly until the rear connector seats into the backplane.

Hand-tighten the thumb screws on the front panel to secure the module.

SFP Installation:

Insert compatible Hirschmann M-FAST SFP transceivers into the 8 slots.

Ensure dust caps remain on unused ports to protect optics from airborne contaminants.

Connect appropriate LC fiber optic cables or RJ45 Ethernet patch cables according to the installed SFP type.

5. Fault Diagnosis

Module Power LED Off:

Verify the module is fully inserted and the slot retaining screws are tight.

Check the MACH4000 chassis power supply health and backplane status.

Link / Act LED Inactive:

Ensure the SFP transceiver is fully latched into the slot.

Check fiber optic polarity (Tx to Rx, Rx to Tx).

Test optical attenuation/power levels; verify fiber patch cables are not bent beyond minimum bend radius.

Data Errors or Frame Losses:

Check for mismatch in speed/duplex settings between connected media partners.

Clean optical fiber connectors using an approved optical lint-free cleaning tool.
