Battery manufacturer LG Energy Solution will supply the batteries for electric vehicles made by Rivian under a newly announced agreement between the companies.
Under the deal, an Arizona-based subsidiary of South Korea-based LG will produce 67 gigawatt-hours of battery capacity for Rivian over a span of five years.
LG Energy Solution’s 4695 batteries will power Rivian’s R2 electric sport-utility vehicles in the U.S.
LG says that its 4695 cylindrical battery is larger and offers six times more capacity than its current 2170 battery. The battery’s larger dimensions provide more energy density, as well as improved safety and space efficiency, officials added.
The batteries will be made at LG Energy Solution’s Arizona plant within the first year of production. They will be delivered to Rivian’s plant in central Illinois.
LG officials called the agreement a “key milestone” in the company’s efforts to strengthen its presence in the U.S. EV market. The company noted that it is seeing interest in the battery from other automakers, as well.
