You can pursue an exciting STEM career without a bachelor’s degree. From engineering technician to computer support specialist, check out these nine fulfilling jobs that don’t require a four-year university degree.

1. Engineering Technician

Engineering technicians assist engineers and technologists with their projects, performing tests, collecting data, assembling and monitoring equipment, conducting maintenance, and recording study results.

To secure a job as an engineering technician, you will need an associate degree or a certificate from a vocational-technical school. As you gain further experience, your employer may allow you to participate in more complex engineering projects or fund further education.

2. Welder

Welders assemble and repair pieces of metal using high-heat machinery that melts the metal into shape. They must study blueprints, calculate dimensions, and inspect items for defects.

As well as a high school degree, you will need to complete welder training and industry certifications to qualify as a welder.

3. Environmental Engineering Technician

Environmental engineering technicians assist environmental engineers as they work to develop solutions to environmental problems. The role involves collecting samples of air, soil, and water, and assembling and preparing equipment.

To become an environmental engineering technician, you will need an associate degree in environmental engineering technology or a related field.

4. Web Developer

Web developers are responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining websites to ensure they are visually appealing and seamless for users to navigate.

Some employers will only recruit web developers if they have a bachelor’s degree. However, it is possible to secure an entry-level position with an associate degree and work your way up from there.

5. Electronic Assembler

Electronic assemblers build electronic components (like motors), subassemblies, and products using tools like bolts, rivets, welds, solders, press fits, and other hand tools.

At a minimum, you will need a high school diploma or a GED certificate, plus some experience working with circuit boards or electric wiring. Some hiring organizations will require an associate degree in electronics engineering.

6. Pharmacy Technician

Pharmacy technicians assist pharmacists in retail pharmacies and hospitals by dispensing, packing, and labeling prescription medicines, checking inventory, and filing paperwork.

You will need a high school diploma or a GED certificate to work as a pharmacy technician.

7. Computer Support Specialist

Computer support specialists provide technical support to people and organizations using computer software or equipment. They might help with log-in difficulties or operating system and software malfunctions.

The qualifications needed to become a computer support specialist depend on the type of role you apply for and the requirements of individual employers. In some cases, a high school diploma and relevant information technology (IT) certifications will be sufficient. In others, you will need an associate degree.

8. Ultrasound Technician

Ultrasound technicians are healthcare professionals that operate medical equipment designed to record images from inside a person’s body. They may work in hospitals, doctor’s clinics, and medical laboratories to assist doctors, nurses, and radiologists.

To qualify as an ultrasound technician, you will need an associate degree and to complete supervised clinical training.

9. Machinist

Machinists shape metal, plastics, ceramics, and wood into precision parts using lathes, milling machines, and grinders.

As well as a high school diploma or GED certificate, you will need to complete training via a community college, trade school, or apprenticeship program.
