Black Friday, one of the busiest shopping days of the year, is often associated with the gold crash of 1869. Some say the holiday’s name comes from how retailers under losses (in the red) began reaping profits (in the black) close to the Christmas shopping season.
However, the name is widely attributed to the Philadelphia Police, who, in the early 1960s, used the phrase to describe the pandemonium resulting from manning crowds attending the annual Army-Navy football game and then finishing their Christmas shopping afterward.
This offered retailers an opportunity, and many began offering unheard-of discounts on goods unsold throughout the year. By the 1980s, Black Friday had become an event not to be missed by the world, and with each passing decade, the discounts kept getting sweeter and the queues longer.
Now, many Black Friday deals can be found online, ultimately paving the way for Cyber Monday and Small Business Saturday.
