The CompactLogix controller, part of the Logix family of controllers, provides a small, powerful, cost-effective system consisting of the following:
• RSLogix™ 5000 programming software
• Built-in communication ports for EtherNet/IP (1769-L32E and 1769-L35E only) and ControlNet (1769-L32C and 1769-L35CR only) networks
• A 1769-SDN communication interface module providing I/O control and remote device configuration over DeviceNet networks
• Built-in serial port on every CompactLogix controller
• Compact I/O modules providing a compact, DIN-rail or panel-mounted I/O system.
Loading Controller Firmware
The controller ships without working firmware. You must download
the current firmware before you can use the controller. Initially, the
1769-L35E firmware is only available on the support website.
The 1769-L20, -L30 firmware is available on the website and on the
RSLogix 5000 CD. To load firmware, you can use:
• ControlFlash utility that ships with RSLogix 5000 programming software.
• AutoFlash that launches through RSLogix 5000 software when you try to open or create a project and the controller does not have the current firmware.
• a 1784-CF64 CompactFlash card with valid memory already loaded (only supported by the 1769-L35E controller).
IMPORTANT
Consider the following before upgrading the firmware on your Logix5000 controller:
• Before updating your controller, we strongly recommend that you review information pertinent to previous major firmware revisions.
For example, when updating from revision 17.xxx to 19.xxx, view information in the following publications:
- CompactLogix Controllers, Revision 17 Release Notes, publication 1769-RN012
- CompactLogix Controllers, Revision 18 Release Notes, publication 1769-RN013
Firmware release notes contain material for all minor revisions subsequent to each major revision.
If your controller, for example, is at revision 17.011, and not the last minor revision, 18.015,
you should view all of the information for revisions 17.011...18.015 before updating to revision 19.xxx.
• After upgrading the firmware on your module, we strongly recommend that you retest or validate your application offline before going online.
Analog I/O Modules
Choose analog, thermocouple, or RTD modules for these features:
• Individually configurable channels
• Ability to enable and disable channels individually
• Onboard scaling
• Auto calibration of inputs
• Online configuration
• Selectable input filters
• Over-range and under-range detection and indication
• Selectable response to a broken input sensor
• Selectable power source
• Input modules offer both single-ended or differential inputs
• Ability to direct output device operation during an abnormal condition
• High accuracy ratings
The data can be configured on board each module as:
• Engineering Units in volts or milliamps.
• Scaled-for-PID.
• Percent of range.
• Raw/Proportional Data for maximum resolution.
Each 1769 I/O module has a distance rating.
In 1769 systems, the distance rating is the number of modules between the specific module and the 1769 power supply.
In a 1768 system, the distance rating is the number of modules between the specific I/O module and the 1768 controller.
Consider the following before you install the software:
• We recommend you install RSLinx communication software, version 2.057, before you install ControlFLASH software, version 9 (CPR9 SR3).
• If you install RSLinx communication software, version 2.057, before you install ControlFLASH software,
version 9, you can enable or disable the FactoryTalkSecurity platform during ControlFLASH software, version 9, installation.
However, to disable the FactoryTalk Security platform, you must first uninstall ControlFLASH software, version 9, then reinstall it.
• If the FactoryTalk Security platform is enabled during ControlFLASH software, version 9, installation,
the software opens with a Select FactoryTalk Directory dialog box.
At that dialog box, click the following: – Network – Local– Cancel - If you click Cancel, you must select a directory.
• ControlFLASH software, version 9, only integrates the FactoryTalk Security platform in the FactoryTalk Services Platform, version 2.030 or later.
